Jakarta — The commitment to creating environmentally responsible mosques continues to gain momentum through the EcoMasjid Initiative of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). One of its practical efforts is conducting mosque mapping activities to identify environmental potential, institutional readiness, and opportunities for developing sustainable environmental programs within mosque communities.
On Friday, November 6, 2026, Muchlis Djuniarsah, a member of the EcoMasjid MUI Team, conducted a working visit to Jami’ Ar Raudhah Mosque, located in Ragunan, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. The visit was part of the mosque mapping agenda in preparation for implementing the EcoMasjid MUI standardization program.
This mapping activity serves as an initial step toward gaining a comprehensive understanding of the mosque’s environmental conditions while identifying areas with potential for further development. Key aspects include environmental cleanliness, waste management systems, responsible water consumption, energy efficiency, green spaces, and environmental education initiatives for worshippers and the surrounding community.
EcoMasjid MUI encourages mosques to expand their roles beyond places of worship and become centers of education, community empowerment, and environmental awareness.
From an Islamic perspective, maintaining cleanliness, avoiding excessive consumption, and preserving the balance of nature are integral responsibilities of human beings as stewards of the Earth. Environmental protection, therefore, should be translated into concrete actions beginning within our immediate surroundings, including mosques.
Mosques have significant potential to cultivate ecological awareness through religious outreach, educational activities, congregation development, and community-based initiatives. Through these efforts, mosques can become catalysts for behavioral change in addressing environmental challenges such as waste accumulation, pollution, excessive consumption of natural resources, and the loss of green spaces.
In this context, the mapping of Jami’ Ar Raudhah Mosque represents an initial effort to identify opportunities for implementing EcoMasjid principles in accordance with the mosque’s specific conditions and characteristics.
Beyond identifying environmental potential, this mapping activity also plays an important role in preparing for the implementation of EcoMasjid MUI standards.
Standardization is essential to establish clear guidelines, measurable indicators, and structured implementation stages. Through these standards, the development of environmentally friendly mosques is expected to become more systematic, focused, and measurable.
The EcoMasjid program goes beyond maintaining the physical cleanliness of mosque buildings. It also promotes comprehensive environmental management systems involving mosque administrators, worshippers, local communities, and other stakeholders committed to environmental sustainability.
The results of the mapping process are expected to serve as a foundation for developing program recommendations, determining mentoring and assistance needs, and designing environmental initiatives suited to the potential and capacity of each mosque.
The working visit to Jami’ Ar Raudhah Mosque represents part of EcoMasjid MUI’s ongoing efforts to expand its network of mosques committed to environmental conservation.
Through mapping and standardization, EcoMasjid MUI seeks to establish an environmental movement that goes beyond ceremonial activities and encourages practical implementation in everyday life, generating meaningful benefits for society.
Moving forward, the involvement of mosques across different regions is expected to strengthen an environmental conservation movement rooted in Muslim communities. Mosques are encouraged to play an increasingly active role in creating cleaner, healthier, greener, and more sustainable surroundings.
Through the EcoMasjid movement, MUI promotes a vision of mosques that are not only prosperous in worship activities but also deliver tangible ecological and social benefits to their surrounding communities.
